Although both his parents are native Californians, Mr. Buckman
was born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii. After earning a 4.0
GPA in course work at Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa,
California, Mark returned to Honolulu to work as a real estate
salesperson. Over the next several years, he earned his broker's
license, became Vice President of Buckman & Co., Inc.,
and handled over $10,000,000 of residential real estate transactions.
Mark also actively invested in, owned, and helped others set
up and run several small businesses.
When Hawaii's real estate market crashed, Mark decided to
return to college to complete his undergraduate degree. He
was accepted at the University of California at Berkeley,
where he majored in political science, graduating in 1994.
Mark stayed on at Berkeley to attend its Boalt Hall School
of Law, which is consistently ranked one of the top ten law
schools in the United States. While there, Mark received High
Honors (top 10% of the class) in numerous courses, including
Property, Corporations, and Contracts.
After law school, Mark passed both the California and Hawaii
bar examinations on the first try. He then began working as
an associate attorney in the real estate department of Mayer,
Brown & Platt's Los Angeles office. Since Mayer, Brown
& Platt is one of the country's ten largest law firms,
this gave Mark an opportunity to represent large commercial
lenders, REITs, and other firm clients by negotiating and
drafting documents for a wide variety of commercial real estate
transactions, including purchase and sale agreements, leases,
Mayer, Brown & Platt, Mark went on to World Premier Investments,
where he served as Associate Counsel and Assistant Vice-President-Leasing.
While working at WPI, Mark negotiated and drafted leases for
shops and pads in new neighborhood shopping centers in California
and Nevada with tenants such as Hollywood Video, Bank of America,
KFC, Panda Express, Papa John's Pizza, World Savings Bank,
Supercuts, and Texaco Xpress Lube, among others. Mark also
negotiated and drafted purchase contracts for the sale of
WPI's neighborhood shopping centers and drafted a leasing
procedures manual to standardize and improve operations.
